New Science block is opened by STEM Ambassador at Stroud High School

On Wednesday 3rd April, E G Carter & Co Ltd celebrated with Stroud High School as they handed over the newly refurbished Science block.

The handover welcomed a range of guests including staff, students, the design team and scientist Dr Michael McEllin along with his daughter and former student of Stroud High School, Alice McEllin.

The new block was officially opened by Dr Michael McEllin who has been involved with the school for many years, both as a parent and subsequently a volunteer supporting science students in multiple activities. He said “I am really delighted that this new science block is here at Stroud High. There is still a great under representation of women in Science, Technology and Engineering, it’s sad as these careers give people the best chance to actually change the world. Women ask different questions to men and the more women the industry embraces the more change we will see. These are doors of opportunities so let’s start using them”

Alice McEllin a former student at Stroud High School attended the opening with her father and is currently studying a PhD at York University. She explained that if it wasn’t for Stroud High her career may not be what it is today. “I was a student at Stroud High for 7 years of which I had a really great time. Thanks to the experiences it has led me down my own path. When I left, I went on to study Chemistry at the University of York and after enjoying it so much I have signed up for another 3 years to complete my PHD in Liquid Crystals. I can say with complete confidence that I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for Stroud High School. Thank you!”

Works to the Science block included a full refurbishment to the existing science building with the addition of a further two ‘superlabs’. This new facility has provided the school with state of art practical Science spaces that all of the students will benefit from for many years to come.

Peter Blanch, Associate Director at E G Carter & Co Ltd said “Carrying out construction works in such a prominent location of the school hasn’t been without its challenges, but it’s a testament to all involved that the works have been carried out safely, incident free on budget and programme. We are delighted to have been a part of this incredible transformation. This new building will be an asset to the school and it’s future students.”

The £1M+ build will become a great addition to the school located in Stroud and will be used for many years to come.
