Local People, Local Project: A Special Story Behind Our Harewood School Extension

At E G Carter & Co Ltd, we’re proud to be delivering a staff room extension project at Harewood Primary School in Gloucester – but this project isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s an example of how our investment in local talent and long-term career development is helping to shape the next generation of construction professionals.

What makes this project stand out is not just the scope of the work, but the team behind it. From site management to skilled trades and apprentices, this project is being delivered almost entirely by our directly employed workforce. That includes site managers, carpenters, bricklayers, apprentices, surveyors, and even department heads – all of whom have deep roots in both E G Carter & Co Ltd and the local area.

Leading the project is Ben Mackey, our Site Manager, who began his career with us as a carpentry apprentice. Ben’s journey through the apprenticeship scheme has equipped him with the skills and experience to now lead projects like Harewood – a great example to those starting out in the industry.

Craig Crowther, now a Contracts Manager, shares a similar journey – having also started as a carpenter apprentice. These two stories illustrate the genuine career progression available within E G Carter for those who show commitment, skill, and passion for the job.

The next generation is already on board. Henry Uzzell, in his first year of a management apprenticeship, is working on site at Harewood – surrounded by people who have taken the path he is now beginning. This project allows Henry to see not just where his training can take him, but also the possibilities of future leadership roles.

And it’s not just the trades where this progression shines. Philip Illing, Head of General Works, started with the company as a Management Trainee and now leads the very team delivering this project. Similarly, Oliver Aherne began as an assistant to our surveying team and now leads the commercial management of this project.

The project team have been supported by our in house bricklaying team and carpenters, all having completed a variety of either apprenticeships or vocational training with EG Carter

This kind of home-grown talent, developed and supported over years, is what sets E G Carter apart. The Harewood project demonstrates our commitment to developing careers from the ground up – and keeping those skills within our local community. It's a project for Gloucestershire, built by Gloucestershire people.

We’re proud of our team, their stories, and the future they represent. Projects like Harewood are more than construction jobs – they’re a reflection of what we value as a company: investment in people, continuity, and community.
