E G Carter & Co Ltd internally refurbish 400-year-old St Mary’s Church in Purton

Over the next 24 weeks, E G Carter & Co Ltd will be working alongside St Mary’s Church in Swindon to internally refurbish the church to enhance the appearance of the medieval architecture.

E G Carter & Co Ltd were chosen by the church after successfully winning the competitive tender.

Works will include the replacement of the fixed Victorian pews with quality upholstered wooden chairs, this will provide flexibility to open up the Church for a greater range of activities. There will also be a greater heating system with more efficient boilers, radiators and better draught-proofing. The walls and ceilings will be cleaned and re-lime-washed - taking care not to damage the medieval wall paintings and a new energy efficient lighting system will be fitted to enhance the architecture and improve light levels for services and secular events. New toilet facilities and a small kitchen will also be fitted to embrace larger events and support activities that the church will host in the near future.

Josh Carter, E G Carter & Co Ltd said “We are looking forward to partnering with St Mary’s Church and refurbishing the internal areas to create a bigger and multi-use area. The original architecture of the church is spectacular, and we are excited to see how the new areas will compliment the existing design.”

The works will be complete by Spring 2021.
