Jordan Newman, 21, a Carpentry Apprentice within the Maintenance Team at Sovereign Housing Association has been learning the ‘carpentry ropes’ at Wycliffe College, Gloucester with help from E G Carter & Co Ltd.
Jordan usually spends a lot of his time on multiple housing sites across the South West within the Maintenance Team working on fitting new door frames, changing locks and replacing windows. In order for him to complete his college course he needed a more rounded experience within his chosen specialism. Sovereign Housing Association called upon their partners E G Carter & Co Ltd who offered to give Jordan two months of work experience on a large construction site.
The past eight weeks have seen Jordan fitting skirting boards, door frames, enhancing window protection as well as shadowing the more experienced tradesmen who have a wealth of knowledge. Jordan explained “This has been an invaluable experience; it has really helped me develop the skills I need to complete my apprenticeship”
Trevor Stevens, Site Manager at E G Carter & Co Ltd said “Jordan has a lot of potential to eventually be a great carpenter; he is enthusiastic, willing to learn and passionate about the construction industry. Sovereign has gained a great apprentice”
Work at Wycliffe College consists of the demolition of the existing building and the construction of a new three storey accommodation building. The new building will consist of over 60 bedrooms, a sauna, a range of common and social rooms, and views which look over the beautiful Stroud district. All complemented by pre-cast stone reveals, a zinc roof and photovoltaics on the building envelope.
E G Carter & Co Ltd has been partners with Sovereign Housing Association for over 10 years delivering a number of sites across the South West of England.
