Associate Director shares his journey through the Apprenticeship Scheme

Phil Barnes is one of E G Carter & Co Ltd.’s longest-serving Management Trainees and started with E G Carter and Co Ltd in September 1999 as a Surveying based Management Trainee.

Phil’s first 6 months were spent on site shadowing a Site Manager to gain a basic understanding of how a site is ran and more about the Construction Industry as a whole. Phil went on to complete his ONC followed by HNC (Higher National Certificate) at Gloucestershire College once a week over a 4 year period.

At the end of his apprenticeship Phil went on to become a Surveyor within the Housing team with a focus upon the financial aspects of a Construction project. E G Carter & Co Ltd supported Phil’s career ambitions which saw Phil’s promotion to Senior Surveyor followed by Regional Manager and finally to his current role of Associate Director for E G Carter & Co Ltd.

Phil and his fellow Associate Director Mat Vye jointly manage the Housing team. The role is wide ranging and includes responsibility for all aspects of the production and financial activity of the Housing team.

I’m a real advocate of the Companies Management Trainee programme as our team is a testament to its success. Without the Management Trainee Apprenticeship, I wouldn’t be where I am today, E G Carter & Co Ltd have helped me gain the experience and skills to co-manage a significant part of the Company.”

E G Carter & Co Ltd currently have 9 Apprentices and Management Trainees with the ambition to take on another 2-4 in September this year.
